Bewitched

Don't be mislead by the title.  This will NOT be a list of Halloween (Samhain) appropriate books.  I don't do scary, creepy, spooky, or terror.  Remember, if you can't imagine the book being translated to the screen by the Muppets, then it's probably too scary for me.

I'm referencing the not-at-all-spooky Samantha Stevens - the main character from the Bewitched TV show.  Ah.... what a great show.  One of her many powers was the ability to twitch her nose & make time freeze.  Completely stop!  She (& whoever needed a quick talking to) would continue on while the rest of the world was on pause.  Then, a finger snap from Sam, & everyone finished sipping their martinis & wagging their fingers at Darwin.

I've always wanted this power.  Just think of it!  In addition to meeting deadlines with ease, just think of the NAPS I could take!  Chores wouldn't interfere with fun times because I could just hop into a time bubble, clean the bathroom, take a shower, have a cup of coffee & snap back into the time stream!

And the books!  My to-be-read list grows every day.  I read a lot & pretty quickly, but I can acquire new books even faster.  All those authors out there adding to the literary world - how can I possibly keep up?  tinkle-inkle-ink - instant reading bubble.  Such a heavenly daydream...

But it is just a daydream.  Aside from the obvious flaw in this plan - my inability to stop time or even, truth be told, wiggle my nose - there are other issues.

As mentioned, I read a lot.  Science fiction has covered this particular power many times.  Whether by supernatural, mechanical, or quantum means, this power has popped up in The Twilight Zone, Arthur C. Clark anthologies, Star Trek, Harry Potter (sorta),  From nuclear war to aging & insanity, this plan is always doomed.

So I can't read all the books.

Dang.

But I can read a LOT of books.  And knowing that I can't read them all might free me up to dive into the pile wherever and whenever I want.

Which is convenient since, you know, that's already what I do.

I should probably reset my Goodreads Goal for 2016 too.  I blew past that & there are still 3 months to go.

About Time

An hour stuck in traffic v an hour in World of Warcraft.

The hour of sleep from 10pm to 11pm v the hour from 5am to 6am.

We have gears & atomic vibrations to pinpoint the duration of those 60 minutes.  They are exactly the same length of time.

One day (tomorrow for example) v the past 35,328 days.

That's 96 years, 8 months, 19 days that my dad has been on this earth.  And tomorrow is one more that he will probably still be here.

Ticking by.  The hours we spend & waste.  The days we try to notice & use wisely, but may regret & second guess.

The vast past.
The future.

And yes, it is "about time" that I post again.  Two months.  Oy.  I have done things.  Sewing things. Reading things. Hitting things with sticks.  Singing, crying, laughing.  Wrestling the puppy & hiding in my room.

This day, I will do what I can.  I will work, share love, & try not to spatter crazy on anyone.

I will savor each moment - except the ones that I don't - & I will strive to not wig out about it either way.

Random Treasures

Unexpected finds on a cold, headachy day.

First
A package arrived from Melinda's Fabric Shop.
Oh yeah - They had some great batiks on sale the other day.

Sweet!
Second
I was clearing out my temporary files (a perfect project for a blechy day when I can't concentrate on math).

Not many treasures in there.  Random bids & plans - a picture or two.  Then I found an article that my awesome KT wrote for the zoo volunteer newsletter.  I read it back then and I'm sure I kept a copy for the manchild's scrapbook, but I haven't look at it since then.

Too cool not to keep at hand.  Too cool not to share.  We'll file this under the "book" heading.

A genuine treasure - don't you think??

True Love

Inspired by my darling & brilliant niece (I have many nieces & nephews) I'm offering a few words on love.
    Tim Minchin (and hence NSFW!!!)

In the "almost too true to be funny" category
I present:

Hank Green

Watch those first.
Fires at Midnight

Then, if you want a more serious idea of what I really think about love, check out this video & read the lyrics.

To me, the most romantic song ever written.

Really.  (I don't joke about Jethro Tull.)

The most difficult projects can be the most rewarding.  Be mindful of who you pick for your lab partner. Pull your own weight.  Pick up slack.  And laugh, even through tears and struggles.  It will be 23 years of marriage on the 23rd of this month.  I'm so frickin' lucky.

Handsome guy & the sexiest brain I've ever met :)

Fabric Haul...Halted

Tree of Life (that insists on appearing sideways)
After 3 false starts including a long, frustrating digression as I tried to create a clever Venn diagram, I'm officially abandoning this post.  Here's why:
Horse border

  • My phone has become arbitrary about photos.  Some work.  Some don't.  So crazy making.
  • Not a lot of folks read this thing.  And it's really likely that those who do were either with me when I bought the fabric, have been subjected to fabric show-and-tell already, or both (you know who you are).  The other 1-2 of you probably couldn't care less (Or I would have dragged you to the show with me)
  • Writing about the quilt show (where I also failed to take pictures) was dull as a spoon.  I can only imagine what reading that would have been like.
And of course, once that post died, its rotting carcass was just sitting there keeping me from posting anything else.

So - in a nutshell - the Quilt Guru and I went to a show/sale at Expo center.  I found some treasures including a kit (I've never bought a kit before) that we dove into back at her place.
The Amazing kit that I bought.  This is one almost-finished block.  Gorgeous!
It was a great day and I was SO glad to be sewing with her again.

(And I did decide to throw in the fabric pictures that did work,  Even reruns are fun, right?)

Some nice blenders

Just a place holder.

A shot across the bow.  To break the ice.  Check the settings.  Mix the metaphors.
